Winter in the UK and more specifically Scotland offers some of the most demanding walking and climbing in the world (I met some Chinese climbers last year in the Cairngorms!!)

It's worth noting a beginners winter climbing course can be tailored to accommodate most abilities. Some previous rock climbing and/or winter walking experience is a distinct advantage but more important is a good level of fitness and a great deal of enthusiasm!! If you have no experience of being on a mountain in winter, don't feel that you cannot join in. All that will happen is a day's worth of winter skills training before we go will be necessary. These courses can be tailor made to suit all, please contact us for further information.

The skills required to ensure that you don't become one of the many statistics are not complicated but are ultimately important. All aspects of the winter environment are covered on our courses, the weather and how it has an impact on our journey, avalanche awareness, movement on snow and ice with and without crampons, ice axe arrest etc

  • Selection and organisation of personal kit appropriate to winter hillwalking.
  • Personal movement skills on snow including kicking steps and using the ice axe for walking, self-belay, cutting steps, and self-arrest.
  • Use of crampons in ascent/descent.
  • Emergency procedures including digging and use of emergency shelters.
Avalanche awareness and safe route choice.
  •  Winter Navigation Techniques

The winter program for 10/11 has ust been finalised. Click on the courses link to see whats on offer!! Book early though as they will be going fast...
